Fall brings some of the best conditions of the year for lawn care. After the heat of summer, cooler nights and seasonal rains create the perfect window to seed, fertilize, and aerate your yard. By taking a few simple steps now-like overseeding, mowing at the right height, and improving soil health-you'll set your lawn up to recover from summer stress and thrive next spring.
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - After a summer of high heat followed by late-season rains, the current stretch of cooler weather has created some of the most favorable conditions of the year for lawn care. Experts say now is the perfect time to seed, fertilize, and aerate before the cold sets in.
"Ideally, this is the best time to seed from now through the middle of October," explained Gary Courchesne of G & H Landscaping. "Once the nights get very cold and the soil cools down, seed won't germinate."
Aeration is another key fall task. Combined with overseeding, it opens up the soil, improves root growth, and ensures new seed makes solid contact for successful germination. Courchesne also recommends mowing at a higher setting-no shorter than 3 1/2 inches - to keep grass strong and resilient. One more important reminder: skip the crabgrass preventer if you're putting down new seed, since it can block germination.
With the right care this fall, lawns can bounce back from summer stress and head into winter healthier-setting the stage for a lush, green lawn next spring.
